Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Fans

The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Penalties

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples involve:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Issues and Media Attention

The incident follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing effort to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their status or wealth.
