Blues Boss Maresca Dismisses Man City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester, responded to the persistent rumours about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a possible extra year available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.
Tensions After Previous Remarks
Maresca's most recent statement come in the wake of he described a recent 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had sparked considerable speculation of a possible rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The manager however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back ahead of schedule, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter in the open, there has equally been no resolution offered, leaving the matter unresolved.
The mood during these press conferences has become notably awkward, raising fears it could impact what has up to now been a decent beginning to the season.
Chelsea's on-field position is positive: they are fourth in the Premier League, have qualified for the League Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a favourable Champions League position with strong performances in their remaining games.
