A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the morning of Saturday, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
